A Totaly FREE DAW Setup! Here I am going to list a complete studio DAW setup that is totally FREE, and that anyone can set up and use with relative ease (PC only). I have had this setup running on a P3 700 with 640mb memory and a Soundblaster Live! card, and it did fine. I made my first 2 CD's, Middle Of The Storm and Scattered Showers, with this setup. The Kristal Audio Engine A free and easy to use piece of software. Will record up to 16 track's, has ASIO support, and you can use VST effects along with the good ones that are built in. The following VST effects (along with the built-in ones) are what I use 99% of the time with Kristal, and I think they are must haves!Kjaerhus Audio Classic Series A great set of useful general purpose VST plugins that cover all the bases. Digital Fish Phones This set is the cleanest sounding free set I have found. the Fish Fillets, Blockfish, Spitfish, and Floorfish, can really help you perfect your vocal tracks. And Endorphin rock's!
All of the above have the advantage of having presets to get you going. I like this because 90% of the time a preset will be in the ballpark of what you are looking for, and anything that saves time in the studio I am all for!
The following is the Audio Editor that I recommend to use with KAE, and it is called Wavosaur. From the site..... Wavosaur is a free sound editor, audio editor, wav editor software for editing, processing and recording sounds, wav and mp3 files. Wavosaur has all the features to edit audio (cut, copy, paste, etc.) produce music loops, analyze, record, batch convert. Wavosaur supports VST plugins, ASIO driver, multi channel wav files, real time effect processing. You can use your favorite VST effects with it, and create "chains" of VST effects and save them as presets. It has worked with every one of the free VST's that I have tried with it, and that I also use with Kristal. It will import right back into Kristal with no problems, and since it can use ASIO, sample rates are not a problem. It supports mp3, ogg, ai ff, wav, and a few other file formats also, and has a batch converter that works well.
The next addition to this list is called TrakAx This piece of software reminds me of Garage Band and Power Tracks Pro with it's colorful, balloon style interface. But don't let that fool ya, this is one serious piece of software. It is the only one that I know of that works with loops almost as easy as Acid! And the price is right ...FREE! I use the above to creat Drum tracks out of loops, and you will find some Free Loops to get you started from Smart Loops when you sign up for the News Letter !
For drum machines I recommend 2, the totally free to use Hotstepper, and the great MDrummer Small! By using all of the software listed above with the Kristal Audio Engine you can have a complete 16 track home recording setup, with some good effects & nice sounding drums, for FREE! I will be doing a series of tutorial's of how it all works together in the near future. In the mean time, why not go grab it all and check it out! Check out my VST page for more of my favorite plugins that I can recommend to folks. and that work fine with the above software. I am listing these separate because they are really not a "necessity" to get up and recording. These are my "extra" ones....just in case! All Information Is Subject to Modification, Additions or Corrections. Please Return Periodically to Check for Any That Might Be Made. New Info Gets Added; Changes Are Implemented; And My Knowledge Is Still Growing As I Explore "Stuff"!
