Helpful Computer Free-B'sHere I will list some programs that I have used for years, and have found to be in that group of "Utility" programs that every Windows machine needs, but are never thought of UNTIL they are needed........ And the best part is the, as of 6-08 these are all FREE! So I hope you find something that you can use here..
If you need a word processor whose documents are fully compatible with Word and Word Pad, saves in the RTF format, but don't really want all the bloat of a complete suite like Open Office, Microsoft Office, or WordPerfect, this is what you are looking for. Super small, with Spell Check, Tab Browsing , and Graphic & Table insertion, this little item has been a mainstay on my system for over 5 years. The free version is really a full featured program, but the paid version does give some nice added features.
If you need to convert all of that typing you did in Jarte to a friendly format that 1000's of systems can read, no matter if they are Windows, Apple, or Linux, then you need to create a PDF. And PrimoPDF will do it for free! You install this as a virtual printer driver, then when you need to create a PDF you just hit "Print". The document will be created with all graphics & tables intact, and rendered to your desktop as a PDF that can be read with any PDF reader. Of course, I have one of those to recommend also, and it is called.............
This program has read every PDF I have thrown at it, opens 100x faster than Adobe's reader, and has some nice features. Another program I have used for a few years, and am very happy with.
A free zip program that will open almost all the zip formats out there, and allows you to create self-extracting zip files in 7-Zip format for free! It has worked on every file I have tried it on, is easy to use, and is super small.
This free program is a great find! It will "read" all of your EULA (End User License Agreements) and look for specific terms that are a "must read" for you.....(if you read the entire EULA before installing Windows, you don't need this!) When I decided to try my hand at HTML, I really didn't want to go "cold turkey" from my favorite Web Page Creator SiteGenWiz, so I went out searching and found Page Breeze. Tho I am new to this, I was able to set up this site within a week of downloading it.
This, and the one below, are mentioned on my "Software" page for the studio, but I feel are also useful for everyday computing. MP3 Gain will take all of the MP3's on a system and place them all at the same volume level. It does not do it by "normalizing" the files, it analyzes every one and sets it's volume to 89db (or whatever you chose). After running into this a few years back I was sold. It was nice to create a play list and not have to reach for the volume control every song, they all play back at the same volume, so I can kick back and enjoy!
This is one fast and efficient CD ripper. You can rip to .wav, mp3, .ogg, monkey, etc. You can also use it to convert between formats. It has a built in function to connect to the CDDB and retrieve all the relevant album info with one click, and it can be used to convert between formats. It works great!
